8/6/2014 - Hammers and Flames

Today began with a beautiful morning after the storms from last night had past.  We had breakfast at 7:00 today so we could get an extra hour of AM construction project time.  For breakfast we had tortillas, eggs, black beans and chorizo sausages which had quite a unique flavor!  Devotions followed which were held by "Big Ben" and Bri.  So after we departed to the orphanage and arrived to smiling children and list of projects that we didn't finish the day before.

We started the morning by grading more gravel in front of boys dorm to smooth out the final grade.  Another group prepped the new wood for paint on the playground that was installed yesterday.  We also finished the install of the two ceiling vents and fans in the bodega roof, tomorrow we will seal by using silicon and roof tar.  A total of four wooden benches were also repaired as much of the wood was split and screws were loose.  The new freezer was also loaded with food from the old freezer which is in of repair to the door cover holding the insulation in the door.  A lot was accomplished today but more projects are still waiting for tomorrow! For lunch we went to the local mall for Pollo Campero, an  authentic fast food joint serving various chicken (pollo) dishes, we had chicken nuggets, chicken thighs, drums and french fries.  After we traveled back to the hotel to cleanup and gather VBS supplies.
We headed back to the orphanage at 2:45 and were greeted by over a hundred screaming children!  We sang and danced with the kids to burn off some of their energy prior to the days VBS projects.  The project for today was a coloring activity of the three crosses.  Once the kids finished the coloring project they were given a 3D star project which they colored and added stickers to.

We headed back to the hotel at 5:30 and had a dinner of black beans, rice and beef fajitas.  Devotions followed which we lead by Sue and Ben.  After we went back to the orphanage for the bonfire that was cancelled due to yesterday's storms.  The kids were very excited as the fire raged and food was prepared.  We had 300 hot dogs split in half for a total of 600 pieces that were roasted over the fire by the homemade roaster we made earlier in the day.  In addition 300  marshmallows were also roasted over the fire and eaten.  Today was another very enjoyable and rewarding day for both the kids and the team!
