Today was another enjoyable and successful day, filled with hard work, laughter and lots of pizza! The day started with breakfast at 8:00 consisting of eggs mixed with ham, black beans and tortillas. After we had devotions which were lead by "Big Ben" and Cami. Soon we departed to the orphanage amidst the twists, turns and hills of Huehuetenango, about a fifteen minute ride.
The construction projects that were worked on today consisted of inspecting and ordering more water filters (6) as they get clogged with volcanic silt in the water system, the new filters will last about 30 days before needing to be replaced, a testament to the poor water quality. Another project consisted of moving and completing the final grade of gravel in front of the dorms for the boys. Some of the wooden playground equipment was in need of repair as well so there was much sawing, drilling and screwing to replace various broken boards on the main playground set. The new Frigidaire deep freezer was also moved into place today while the old one was moved to another location. The process of installing two new ceiling vents in the bodega also began, to be continued tomorrow!
For lunch we ordered Dominos pizza for the kids and served them large quantities of pop. The total pizza order came to 50 pizzas and 20 3 liters of pop all of which was eaten and drank in less than one hour! Many of the kids requested mixed drinks of Coca Cola, Grape, 7up, Crush and the Guatemalan version of Sunny D.
For todays VBS we sang songs and danced with the kids for about 30 minutes. Following all 120 kids had a coloring project of Moses, after which they made friendship bracelets with string and beads, lots of beads everywhere! Snacks were also served after the kids were done with their friendship bracelets, they had fruit punch with cookies and crackers. Following we played with the kids to burn off some of the sugar they consumed throughout the day.
We left the orphanage at 6:00 and had dinner accompanied by a thunderstorm. Dinner included chicken and beef fajitas and was absolutely delicious, the cooks were very gracious for our large appetites. Devotions followed which were lead by John. A bonfire with the kids was planned for tonight but was cancelled due to the thunderstorm. In place of the previous we went to a cafe and had coffee, dessert and fellowship.
Another great day! If you've never experience this in past I urge you to go, experience new things, help those in need and enjoy the WORLD our great creator has made for us!
