Day 1

Day 1
Our bags are packed and we are ready to go. We leave EMCRC around 12:00 a.m. and head to Chicago’s O'Hare Airport. We had a good trip and were fortunate to have some one process all 16 of us with out having to weigh each suitcase. That was a real time saver!! The flight to Houston and to Guatemala went very smoothly. We did have to bypass a storm, but there were no delays in our arrival time. We were met at the airport by Buckner and taken to the motel and met our leaders and interpreters. They will be with us through out the week. After lunch we went to San Gabriel (boy's orphanage) and had a chance to meet with the boys. Some of us were a little apprehensive at first, not knowing what to expect.
Guatemala is very unique; it covers a wide area but there are sections separated by steep valleys. Traveling in the city is more like a roller coaster ride --it appears that stop signs are really only a suggestion for 99% of the drivers. After supper, we still had to go over the next day's agenda and organize our supplies. By now we have had little to no sleep for about 36 hour and we were all anxious to get to bed!
